Deal struck on Florida cut unemployment benefits

Outside the work of Florida's receiving less state benefits, while businesses pay less taxes under a controversial proposal approved Friday by a divided legislature. The deal, which Governor Rick Scott is expected to enter into force immediately, cut unemployment benefits by 11.5 percent. Unemployed Floridians continue to a maximum of $ 275 per week to maintain the lowest of all states in the country. But that would be paid no more than 23 weeks, instead of 26th.

The bill also creates a sliding scale and adds short weeks of benefits on the unemployment rate is based. Unemployment benefits would be reduced to a minimum of 12 weeks, when the average unemployment rate drops to 5 percent or less. One week for each recorded 0.5 percent unemployment rate rises.
The change also by 10 percent business tax that pays for unemployment benefits reduced.
"It is a great gift to the economy," Detert said the statement.

Detert, R-Venice, had refused to reduce the maximum number of weeks, but finally relented under pressure from fellow Republicans, many of whom preferred to benefits after 20 weeks cap.

"Some of you wanted to cut the weeks, but that will make you happy," said Detert Senate lawmakers.
