Asia Pacific integration is still hampered


 The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and The Pacific (ESCAP) region to assess connectivity and economic integration between countries is still hampered the Asia Pacific region, al by disharmony of regulation, transportation and telecommunications infrastructure limitations.

ESCAP economist Alberto Isgut said inter-regional integration in the Asia Pacific region is very important, because it can increase economic growth in the rural sector in developing countries.

"But that can not necessarily happen, because there are various obstacles, such as the existence of rules and standards that are not consistent across countries," he said in a seminar about the connectivity between regions, yesterday.

He added that the physical transportation, telecommunication links between countries are inadequate, and bureaucratic barriers are also a major constraint of regional economic integration.

"Trading activities in many countries are still burdened with the complicated customs procedures and time-consuming, the opportunities that are available on the dynamic centers of each country will be stopped at the border, "he said.

In order to keep pace, Isgut said developing countries need to increase export opportunities through a policy of opening access to markets, and increase education.in the Asia Pacific region is very important, because it can increase economic growth in the rural sector in developing countries.

Isgut said today the Asia Pacific region have made it through the global financial crisis, though still shadowed by the uncertainty of world economic recovery. This is reflected by the high
unemployment rates, large fiscal deficits and fiscal consolidation plan.

"However, the integration between regions associated with industrial country markets for exports of the region, the reduction of these dynamics can take place within the next few years," he said.

Isgut add policy that emphasizes connectivity area can help release the untapped market. This amount could be larger than the combined market between the U.S. and the EU.

In addition, the government can encourage the integration of policies relating to the granting of access to employment and business opportunities as well as education and health services.
